Local Culture

Last Saturday, my sisters and I went to the 41st Annual Southington Apple Harvest Festival. It was chilly but luckily nothing like THIS week, which would have made it insane to hang outside to have fun in. But it was perfect Fall weather.

The line for Apple fritters was INSANE as usual on the weekends. The best time to go is during the day on weekdays. They are the one booth open weekdays, like all day. Man that church must rake in so much money. And they have some sort of contract that makes them the only ones allowed to see Apple Fritters.

This is the home stretch of the line, but if you click on the picture, the small people going around the corner, that is the line continuing. Usually on weekends, you wait for hours. And like I have mentioned, if they run out and you have been standing in line for 3 hours, tough luck. So that is why Kate picked up some for us on a weekday. Here is a new '09 pic of the delicious Apple Fritter! I will NOT say how many I ate...I am too ashamed.

So our main objective was finding the best foods. Strangely there was SO much Thai food, I was like WHERE is the Festival food? Like these amazing onion rings?

Thankfully I can get ones just like these 325 days a year, at a local restaurant! They are SO good! We got some potato and cheese perogies first, and you know what? The frozen kind we bake at home are tastier. And these 4 suckers cost $5!! Then Kate got a piece of pizza which she gave to me because she decided the $5 was worth it to get NE Clam Chowder. The pizza sucked, we threw it out. Katie came back and the amount of chowder they gave her was about 1/3 cup. Five bucks for 1/3 of a cup!! And she ended up finding it gross so she threw it out. The only thing I actually asked that we buy was a Lobster Claw pastry. I saw them on a Food Network show and they had looked so yummy! We weren't impressed by the pastry, but the cream inside was HEAVENLY!! Sadly one huge chunk fell to the ground, and another fell splat onto my camera. We were sopping up cream from all the nooks and crannies of my poor new Nikon.

We checked out some of the booths. There was a LOT of Arts and Crafts booths this year!

There was one new booth we had a lot of fun at. Lots of taste testing going on. It was a Almonds and cashews booth and had the most interesting flavored nuts! Bavarian Cream, Apple Crisp, Raspberry, Banana Nut, Punpkin Pie, etc. Some were really good, oh my goodness, and I don't like almonds that much. Some were...interesting, but it was such fun to get to taste test all these different flavors. Kate bought Sam, Mom and Dad each a cone of the Bavarian Cream I believe. They taste a lot like the warm ones we get in Disney World, but those are even better, no competing with Disney!

We didn't bother with the rides, as we want to go to Lake Compounce, and do the Haunted Graveyard and the rides at night. We did it last year and it was SO much fun! And the prices were so high for such lame rides.

Though we did play Whack-a-Mole, Katie's most favorite game, and she did indeed win and here is her loot! A Pirate Bear!

And a few pics of us at the Festival.post signature

The best things about fairs is the food. Hands down.

I can't eat that kind of food, my body gets really mad at me...which I guess is a good thing anyway! Give me a nice big salad and I am in heaven. Sounds like you had fun though!

At Ren Faire, they sell cinnamon toasted almonds. THOSE are AMAZING! I love buying a cone of them and munching all day, especially since they sell them hot.

Festival food usually sucks, honestly. Pizza, burgers. All of it stinks. Except the specialty food.
